Designed for speed and endurance, Borzoi means "swift" in Russian. The Borzoi can be described as "...extremely fast and courageous, yet quiet and gentle and was bred by the Russian aristocracy long before the first Czar came to power". The Borzoi is believed to have originated from a cross between an ancient Kyrgyz Taigan type dog and the early Russian Bearhound, and the Owtchar, a tall sheepdog. Their history dates back to 1260 A.D. even though the first written description did not appear until 1650 A.D. Once known as Russian Wolfhounds, Borzois were bred to be swift and strong enough to hunt and bring down wolves. But, the Borzoi is also a graceful, elegant and aristocratic dog while cruising at 40 miles per hour, which is a truly majestic sight.
