The Azawakh is an ancient breed dating back to over 10,000 years ago. While commonly associated with the nomadic Touareg people, the Azawakh sighthound is also bred by other ethnic groups, such as the Fula, Peulh, Bella and Hausa people. The Touareg call the Azawakh "idi n'illeli" or "The Sight Hound of the free People" and consider them full and trusted members of their families. The Azawakh is found throughout the Sahelian zone of Mali, Niger Burkina Faso and southern Algeria. Its direct origin can be traced to the valley of the Azawagh in the Nigerian middle basin. The Azawakh is used in these regions as a guard dog and to hunt gazelle and hares at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.
