The origin of the Podenco, Cirneco dell'Etna and Podenco Ibicenco is somewhat mysterious and come in a great variety of size, colour and coat, that over many centuries have been defined by region. It is believed that the Podenco made their way to Iberia by the way of invaders from the African continent. The name Podenco is the Spanish word for "Hound. Much like the Galgo, the Podenco faces a very grim life at the hands of Spanish hunters (Galgueros). Galgueros belief that their dogs hunt better when hungry and is usually starved or fed just enough to keep them barely alive. After hunting season ends or no longer useful, they are sometimes hung or poisoned, legs broken or eyes gouged out so they cannot find their way home.
